Webster Critique service
Webster Critique Service offers critiquing of Picture Books.
I have 20+ publications (globally) to date which include picture books and educational books for reading schemes. I am a former primary school teacher and still visit schools in an author capacity. I have critiqued many stories over the past 5 years through SCBWI on-line critique groups.
My service may benefit writers who are just starting out, or writers who just need an extra pair of eyes to look over their story.
The critiques I offer will include advice on:
Formatting: How to structure the layout of your story correctly, for submission to a publisher.
Length: Is your story too long or too short? Suggestions on where to cut, if appropriate.
Title: Is it catchy and eye-catching? Could it be improved?
Target Age: Is the story appropriate for your intended age range?
Story Ark: Does your story have a powerful opening, an engaging hook, and a satisfying ending?
Character: Are your characters relatable and interesting?
Illustration Awareness: Does your story lend itself to lively, varied illustrations? Are there unnecessary areas of text that can be ‘shown’ within the illustrations rather than ‘told’ by the text?
Rhyming Texts: Suggestions on whether the rhyme can be improved and how it works in terms of the story development.
Requesting a Critique:
To request a critique please email me, with the story as an attachment at - firstname.lastname@example.org
with the words CRITIQUE REQUEST in the subject line. Let me know the story title and word count.
I will then respond with payment instructions, which must be made via paypal.
I will also give you an estimation of when I expect the critiques to be completed and returned to you.
I aim to complete the critique within a two week turn around, or less.
Please Note: While I can offer editing and advice, my role does not equate to that of an editor in a publishing house. Likewise, whilst I will endeavour to give advice on how your story can be improved and developed, this does not in any way guarantee that the story will go on to be published.
I offer three types of critiques:
Basic Critique: I read the story and send a two page response with initial thoughts, strengths and weaknesses, and areas that can be improved/developed.
More Detailed Critique: I read the story, make comments and offer specific suggestions with regards to possible word swaps to consider etc, within the text. I also include a two page letter with initial thoughts on the story, plus overall strengths and weaknesses, and areas that can be improved/developed.
Repeat Critique: This critique will apply to stories that you have already received a critique on from me, and have since revised. I will apply a discounted rate to review the new version/draft of that same story. Please note I will only read/critique the same story at this revised rate twice, so please ensure you are completely happy with your edits before requesting a repeat critique.
More Detailed Critique: £55
Repeat Critique: £25
I look forward to reading your stories!
